  2. The 41 Deal tàn xiǎn jiā (adventurers) got off to an easy start at National Airport headed to Toronto, Canada enroute to Beijing. They safely arrived at their hotel after a 13 hour flight. The wi-fi at the hotel is not working, so we only have e-mails. The plan was to arrive at a local school on Monday morning for 7 am flag ceremony and activities with their penpals. The afternoon is a trip to the great Wall of China. Can't wait for the pictures!

    Another e-mail from Ms. Milikin

Today our China classes visited the Great Wall and our sister school in Beijing. The group also took a pedicab ride through the older part of the city, which led us to our dinner location also in the older part of the city.

While visiting the sister school (YuCai School in Beijing), the classes got to speak to the Principal and Vice-Principal. Also, the students from both school exchanged gifts from their native country. Ms. Stallworth was presented with gifts of friendship from the students of YuCai.

Traveling onto the Great Wall was quite enjoyable despite the high heat in the area. On the wall you could travel up to eight check points, though most of the students only traveled to about the sixth check point. After traveling down the wall a majority of the students bought multicolored paper hats. Once we had finished all traveling at the wall we had lunch at a nearby cafe.

Many students took pictures during their pedicab rides. They enjoyed the excitement that from the rides. We rode through the old town of Beijing to people's homes. They cooked for us (the food was absolutely amazing). All in all, the first day was very exciting and we look forward to the rest of the trip!

  7. The 4/14 message is the e-mail text. I summarized the other e-mail in my previous post. Please remember there is a 12-hour time difference. If you go to the EF tours page and look up the itinerary, you will see that today they spent half day in Beijing and then flew to Xi'an. The e-mail address is deal dot china dot 2014 at gmail dot com. I have not seen any e-mails today.

  8. Monday's e-mail was the last e-mail we received. They are two days behind. It is Wed evening in DC and Thursday morning in China. Last year's blog described a very busy trip. Probably a combination of time constraints and lack of access to a computer. Most U.S. phones will not work unless it is an international phone using GSM.

Another e-mail via Nicholas Whitman's mother Anna
    :
    Dear Parents-
Apparently some China trip parents are not receiving updates, but some are. We had not heard any news since the first day. When I contacted Ms Milikin today she kindly responded right away.

If you HAVE received updates after Day 1 in Beijing (school, Great Wall etc), would you mind forwarding to everyone above?
    Thanks and all the best-
    Anna (Nicholas Whitman's Mom)

    FROM MS MILIKIN TODAY:
We are having HUGE issues with wifi. We are doing the best we can to get info to all. It looks like it is going to some parents and not to others. Have no idea why. The blog has not been working either. We are trying to send out emails every day. Pictures are a night mare. We have spent many hours at night trying to get this done. Please know if there is a problem, we will get ahold of you. Everyone is fine and healthy. Please pass the word around.
    Pat Milikin
